Os Clássicos de Harvard, originalmente conhecidos como “Dr. Eliot’s Five Foot Shelf“, fazem parte de uma antologia de 51 volumes de obras clássicas da literatura mundial compiladas e editadas pelo então presidente da Universidade de Harvard, nos Estados Unidos, Dr. Charles W. Eliot e publicada pela primeira vez no ano de 1909.
O então presidente da universidade afirmou diversas vezes em discursos que os principais elementos de uma educação liberal podiam ser alcançados gastando 15 minutos diários de leitura em uma coleção de livros que poderia caber em uma prateleira de um metro. Dessa maneira, a editora P. F. Collier and Son viu uma oportunidade e desafiou o reitor a realizar o que propunha em suas afirmações selecionando uma coletânea de obras. Desse desafio nasceu a coleção “Clássicos de Harvard”.
Eliot trabalhou durante um ano e, determinado a incluir o maior número possÃvel de obras, trabalhou em conjunto com William A. Neilson, professor de inglês da universidade, para selecionar edições especÃficas e incluir notas introdutórias. Cada volume possuÃa entre 400 e 450 páginas ou mais, além de textos considerados “legados escritos do mundo”.
